Ministry Warns That Flooding Will Continue


The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology yesterday warned that water levels in the Mekong River would continue to rise and that flooding is expected to continue at least until the end of September. Rising water levels have already led to flooding in many parts of the country, with Kompong Thom, Siem Reap, Preah Vihearing threshold set by the Ministry of Water Resources. In a statement yesterday, the ministry said that while water levels in Stung Treng, Kratie and Kompong Cham Provinces had started to subside, low-lying areas were still under threat and further flooding is expected. Flooding is also affecting Battambang province, and fierce storms have hit Preah Sihanouk province. Battambang provincial director of administration Poa Brang said that flooding in the province has inundated roads and prevented people from traveling in the area. " The water will be much lower if there is no more rain today or tomorrow," said Mr Brang, adding that floodwaters were mainly affecting areas along the Stung Sangke River, and that flooding this year was far more widespread than last year. Doeur Thida, 26, a villager in Sangke district, said she feared that flooding would affect water quality in the area. "I am worried about my crops and my children. The flood can make my children sick," she said. Sboag Sarath, Preah Sihanouk provincial Governor, said that there was no flooding in the area, but that stormy conditions still prevailed. He also said that tourest numbers appeared to have declined significantly in recent days. Deputy Kompong Cham governor Lorn Limtha said that water levels are now 3.26 meters higher than levels recorded at this time last year, but that no serious damage or injuries have been recorded. «There are only three districts that are seriously affected in eight of the districts that were flooded, he said.
